In this, the long awaited close of Alexander Kent's midshipman trilogy, the new year of 1774 seems to offer Richard Bolitho and his buddy Martyn Dancer the pinnacle of a dream. Both have been endorsed for promotion, nonetheless they have not yet gained the desired lieutenant's commission. But a slight lane from Plymouth to Guernsey in an unused schooner becomes, for Bolitho, a lane from midshipman to King's officer, tempering the guarantee of the future with the caustic cost of maturity.
